Describe your job story:
As a teenager I used to frequent the library to use the computer to complete my homework assignments and research projects. I developed a great relationship with the librarians for my friendly spirit, personality and willingness to help others. Since I spent so much time at the library, the librarians would joke about me working there. A team got together and created an AmeriCorps program called the Library Community Technology Initiative. I began as an AmeriCorps Member with the library teaching computer classes and resume writing to adults and seniors. Sadly after three years the program ended and I applied for a position as a library assistant. I have been with the library system for seven years now. Working with the public everyday takes a lot of patience, knowledge and willingness in trying to understand others. There are a lot of people that have mental health issues, other issues of life. Now days a lot of people are out of work and bummed about it. Getting to know the people who frequent the library helps you understand and assist plus acknowledging the presence of others and smiling diffuses most attitudes every time.

What did you want to be when you were a child/ teenager?
I have always wanted to be a nurse and a teacher. I did some volunteer work at Grady Memorial Hospital and knew I wanted to help people but nursing wasn’t for me. As a child, I used to gather all of my cousins and friends and we would play school and help each other with our homework.

Are doing your dream job?
Yes and no. I am currently getting my BA in Middle Grades Education but I plan to get a MLS and specialize with children and teens. Working at the library still allows me to have an educational setting with the youth and it also lets me know what they are learning in school so I will be better prepared as a classroom teacher. I love the library and it will always be a part of my life.

What do you like MOST about what you do?
I love seeing my patrons succeed. It makes me so happy when they come back and have good news to report to me. Anything from they got the job I helped them apply for or got a call back from a resume and cover letter I helped them put together

What do you like the LEAST?
I hate when people take my kindness for weakness or think that I’m there to serve them like a waiter or servant.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
Teaching Middle School, Obtaining my Masters of Library Science Degree, working part-time at the library and still helping others

Are you happy with where you are in life?
Yes I am. I would like to be in my career but my setbacks have turned into major blessings for me.

What more do you want to do with your life?
I would love to introduce more children to reading and have it develop into a lifetime hobby. I would love to operate a career center that teaches job training to teens and adults and have it be a fun but informative environment

What drives/motivates you?
My relationship with God motivates to be the best person I can everyday and to do it my best ability. I realize I am only one person and that there are only twenty-four hours a day. I always know that when I wake up the next day that its a chance to start over.

What else do you do?
I am a full-time student at Clayton State University majoring in Middle Grades Education with concentrations in Social Studies and Language Arts and ESOL certification.

What is your advice to those who are seeking employment and have no hope?
Just hold on because no storm lasts forever. When you recieve that job you have been waiting for it will mean much more to you. If you have other talents then focus on that and do some volunteer hours. This shows that you have the willingness to work and can potentially give you valuable experience.
