Feature #101: Tamika Smith, Creative Director & Brand Stylist

Name: Tamika Smith

Current Job Position Title: Creative Director and Brand Stylist

Company Name: JOUJOU Creative

Contact Information: http://joujoucreative.com

Special skills: Graphic/Web Design, Character Illustrations and Photography

Describe your job story:
I run a small design studio and I design for nonprofits and small businesses. I launched the studio after my position was eliminated at my previous employer. I found myself unemployed after 8 years and didn't know what I was going to do. After a lot of stressing I realized I could use my skills to continue my career and follow my dreams. It can still be scary at times, but well worth it!

What did you want to be when you were a child/ teenager? A teacher

Are doing your dream job?
Partially. I dream of being a successful photographer and I'm not quite there yet!

What do you like MOST about what you do? What do you like the LEAST?
What I like most is the freedom to be creative and express myself. What I like least is people who take my generosity and talents for granted.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
In the next 5 years I would like to see myself working as a lifestyle and portrait photographer with some of my images published.

Are you happy with where you are in life?
To an extent. I always think that I can do better and that motivates me.

What more do you want to do with your life?
I would like to travel and take my daughter to different parts of the world. I would also like to shoot for some magazines too before its all said and done. I want to leave a legacy for her.

What drives/motivates you? Knowing that I can do better and better is a big motivator. Also looking at what other creatives are doing is both inspiring and motivating.

What else do you do?
I also design for an apparel line for children. The line is geared towards educating youth and starting a dialogue through the designs.

What is your advice to those who are seeking employment and have no hope?
There is always hope and to never give up. Like I stated previously, I found myself unemployed after 8 years and felt lost. I decided to take that opportunity and pursue my passion, my dream job. There is opportunity in every situation. It's all about how you view it and use it!

Feature #100: Corey "Tall Boy" Sanders, On Air Personality...

Name: Corey "Tall Boy" Sanders

Current Job Position Title: On Air Personality Majic 107.5/97.5; Promotions Coordinator for Radio One Atlanta (Hot 107.9 Praise 102.5 Majic 107.5/97.5); Creator of www.tallboy.us

Company Name: Radio One & Tall Boy Enterprises

Contact Information: 404-604-9540 tallboy@tallboy.us

Special skills: Event Emcee, Content Creator/Videography Brand Mananagement

Describe your job story:
I was playing professional basketball in Urugray and I asked my agent could he help me get endorsement deals. (I wanted to be the "Dude your Getting a Dell" guy or the "All State" guy). He told me I wasn't in the NBA so it would never happen. At the end of the season I told him I wasn't returning to play ball professionally and I would be pursuing this dream.

Fast forward 3 months later, I found myself working in a warehouse in the returns department.  I was listening to the radio where Steve Harvey is saying go after your dreams, surround yourself around the people who you want to be. They didn't necessarily have to be a celebrity but someone in that field.  I called every radio station in the Atlanta area asking could I be a board operator. With no experience & already graduating from college no opportunities were available.

A few weeks later I heard Steve Harvey say "Get in on the Ground Floor with God & Watch You Get More" I was already working/volunteering in the media department at church & I asked could I work as a board operator.  After 5 weeks watching the board someone gets sick and my opportunity presented itself. After service a random guy comes up to our area & says, Sound was good. I told him I was trying to get in at the radio station but no one was hiring.  He referred me to the Program Director. I called this guy every day Mon-Fri for 2 months (he wouldn't take my calls) I eventually heard he was out on location on the radio & I showed up he was so shocked I found him that he told me to call him Monday morning. Well he didn't take my call that Monday but I eventually got him.

I worked as an intern for 2 1/2 years before they said we have a position for you in promotions.  I got hired and from there I started making a name for myself. I just told myself I wanted to be memorable and not because of my height (which is 7ft) What was I going to do to make people remember me as an experience at every event, concert, party, or community function.

After 2 years working I got the opportunity to become the Man on the Streets for Majic 107.5/97.5.  I was here, I was there, I was everywhere. While I am doing all of this for the radio station. I was told I had to be known for something.  I said OK, I would recap events through video. I would interview people and capture the moment and do recaps of the events I attended.  That was the start of www.tallboy.us I would go to major concerts award shows or anything that I thought was significant or compelling to watch.  I wanted to create "POSITIVE CONTENT" I then realized people wanted copies of the things I was doing so we created a CD duplication service for short orders.

Well my mentor Si-Man Baby was always in the clubs entertaining people & I said hey I could do this. At first, no one would give me the microphone because no one knew who I was.  I sat back and watched all the things the emcees of these clubs I was attending were doing right & wrong and created my own routine.  Who would have ever thought that I would be the official host for the Bud-Light Atlanta Falcons Tailgates 2 years later.

Well, fast forward a year later my supervisor in Promotions asks us every year to do a vision board and set performance goals.  After reading mine she strongly suggested I sit down with both program directors of Radio One. After creating a presentation of who I was, what I wanted, and what my goals were they said they would try me out on air.  A year later they said Here is your time slot don't screw up this station.  I had no experience and I was on the radio in the #9 market in the USA. Who would have ever thought a kid who grew up in the Carver Homes Projects would have accomplished this goal.

What did you want to be when you were a child/ teenager?
I wanted to work for the Secret Service but because of my height, everyone pushed basketball in front of me.  It was cool, I thought I would play in the NBA.  I remember the day Majic Johnson made the announcement he was diagnosed with HIV. I was in seventh grade at Barker Jr High in Michigan City Indiana. I said I wanted to go to his school and play ball there and I am going to play ball overseas. Fast forward my sophomore year in high school, I moved with my father and he lived in Lansing Michigan and had just moved in the school district that Earvin Majic Johnson attended.

Are doing your dream job?
Yes, I am and I wake up loving what I do.  The only misconception is people think you make a lot of money & YOU DON'T. There are people that work in the service industry that make more money than me and it frustrating at times but hey I rather love what I do and struggle than be financially comfortable dreading going to work.

What do you like MOST about what you do? What do you like the LEAST?
The two best things I love about my job is that I get to entertain people. People are so stressed out over small things and when they see me at an event, party, or function my job is to get you to bounce to the right, bounce to the left and SMILE and if I did a great job you will SCREAM.  Secondly, I get to talk to people who people dream of just being in there presence. I am like I cant believe you are so goo goo, they are regular people.

What do I like the least is people who work in this industry who think they are all of that or won't pass the knowledge down to a young person getting into the business.  They feel threatened that a young personality is going to take there spot.  What's meant for you is meant for you.  The politics is also another thing.  You have to wait your turn for the opportunity.  If I am hungry and a go-getter don't hold me back. Some folks wait on opportunity, Some folks go get opportunity

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
LOL, I have to see where I am going to be tomorrow.  Seriously, I would like to be a household name in my city of Atlanta

I grew up in Atlanta listening to Ryan Cameron at night, Mike & Carol in the morning My mom made me listen to Si-Man & Young Blood which at the time I hated that kind of music they were playing but now I breathe it. I saw how they became staples in the community and I would like to be able to do the same thing.

Are you happy with where you are in life?
Yes & No I am happy with where I am in life, Overall I am happy because I look at where I came from. A kid moving around a lot, A new school every year to graduating from college on a basketball scholarship to playing professional basketball abroad as well here in the states to now doing the next phase of my life.  So for that I am living life and enjoying it.

I say no because financially we all have goals and dreams and I am not there yet and I think that has held me up into creating a personal life with a significant other or family.  We are taught as men to be bread winners and I want to know I can provide for my family and right now although I hold my own I am not there to tell someone I am taking seriously don't worry about it "I GOT IT".  I have a dream, a plan, and an end goal but because I have not arrived I am hesitant to go to the next level with my personal life.

What more do you want to do with your life?
I want to be able to travel more internationally, attend more conferences & events that are of my interest. Lastly, I have a great relationship with God but to have an even better one.

What drives/motivates you?
What drives me, believe it or not; people who don't believe in me or think I can't do something. I love the look on someone’s face when I accomplished the goal that I set out for myself due to someone else's disbelief.  It's not to rub it in there face but to say NEVER under estimate anyone. If that person sees it assist or encourage them to "Make It Happen" or don't say anything at all.

What else do you do?
Although I have no desire to play basketball ever again I pass my knowledge do to kids who are pursuing that career field.  I do career days which I encourage everyone who reads this story to call a school, any school and ask to speak at a career day.  Seriously, Don't think your life story isn't important.  You may potentially be the difference to make a child go into whatever it is you do. I seriously thought my life didn't matter at a career day I attended with my mentor Si-Man. After he spoke, the kids were like who are you? I was the intern at the radio station with no job, no money and felt like how am I going to get this bill paid by Friday.

When I finished speaking all the kids in the room asked for my autograph.  Who would have ever thought I of all people would have connected with those kids.  So please if you take anything away from my story...Promise you will speak to a school, youth detention, or even a recreation center. You never know they may be your boss one day.  REAL TALK

What is your advice to those who are seeking employment and have no hope?
Be persistent, consistent, make yourself memorable. Opportunities happen if YOU just show up. Volunteer with organizations it could be big or small.  I learned sometimes me just helping at an event I will be talking or working with the management of a company who came out to support the same cause I came out to support.  They get to see me and the person who I am.  Oh Yeah, The most important of them all...Be careful what you post on social media. When I say REAL TALK.  I Google people, I go to Facebook, & Instagram and I see what you post. It lets me know whether or not I want to associate myself with you.  So, if I do it trust believe others do it as well.

Feature #99: Me'Chele Daves, Freelance Makeup Artist...

Name: Me'Chele Daves

Current Job Position Title:  Freelance Makeup Artist/ Hair Extension Specialist

Company Name:  Prettiest Problem

Contact Information:
prettyprblm@gmail.com / @MsTrudy (Instagram) / @PrettiestPrblm (Twitter) /
 @prettiestprblm (IG); www.styleseat.com/prettiestproblem

Special skills:
I specialize in makeup application, education and installing hair extensions.

Describe your job story:
I've always had a passion for beauty. I remember one birthday my mother bought me a professional hair kit that included a real mannequin head and a stylist box full of combs, brushes, rollers and other hair styling supplies. Ever since then, I was hooked. I used to do elaborate hairstyles and take pictures of my work. When I was in middle school and high school, I worked as a salon assistant in Brooklyn, NY. When I went away to college, my best friend used to let me install her weaves. I became really good at it and I decided to start charging people to do it. One of my best friends introduced me to the world of YouTube and I began watching makeup tutorials. I instantly became obsessed. That hobby grew from doing my own makeup, to actually doing makeup on others. I became a lot more fascinated with makeup. I see how many women have a hard time with simple beauty tricks. I decided to start building my brand with my Twitter name which is Prettiest Problem which also fit my theme. Being "pretty" shouldn't be a problem.

What did you want to be when you were a child/ teenager?
When I was a child I wanted to deliver babies. I just loved babies so much I thought there could be nothing greater than to bring them into this world. I realized that was not my calling when I found out that I couldn't stand the sight of blood. I'd literally get lightheaded and dizzy at the sight. In high school, I majored in bookkeeping and went on to get a degree in finance in college. I was good with math and numbers, so I figured I'd go into something having to do with money.

Are you doing your dream job?
I am doing my dream job. In the daytime I go to work in accounting, however I realized that I am not as passionate about it. I realized how much I loved doing makeup in my spare time and I am currently building my brand around the beauty culture outside of my 9-5. Being an entrepreneur and doing what I love is my dream job. I'm taking small steps in that direction so I would consider myself to be doing my dream job.

What do you like MOST about what you do?
I LOVE seeing the finished product of what I've done. Many times when I go out, I will volunteer to do a friend's makeup just so I can watch how it enhances her look and attitude. I'll secretly watch her all night just to see the extra confidence a new look brings. That makes me happy.

What do you like the LEAST?
Building a business on your own tends to consume a lot of time. Add that with a regular 9-5 and it can take you from your family quite a bit.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? I see myself as a small business owner in the beauty industry. I'd love to be doing freelance makeup for photoshoots, events, and maybe some television/movies. I was just able to offer my first live, interactive makeup tutorial showing the everyday woman different techniques to apply makeup and I really felt comfortable doing that. I could see myself developing that concept and making it mobile. I'd also love to have my own line of hair extensions as well as accessory line with my branding. I'd like to be a step further to building my own mini empire.

Are you happy with where you are in life?
I'm happy with my life, but I'm not content. I want more for my family and I know we can have it. I have a passion and I think pairing that with a business idea is a perfect start to build the recipe for success. Having supportive people in your corner also helps with the whole vision.

What more do you want to do with your life?
I want more for my family. I want to be proud of my accomplishments. I want to look back and be shocked at what I was able to do and where I came from. I want to be able to make a difference in the lives of those I love as well as people I may only meet once in life. On another note, I'd like to experience traveling with my family. I want my children to see that the world is much bigger than what is in this city and state. There is so much more to life than what we are exposed to on a daily basis.

What drives/motivates you?
Knowing that things can get done and growth is possible motivates me. Seeing people's reaction to their new look motivates me to want to do it again and again. My family motivates me to drive harder and want more.

What else do you do?
I'm a mom, which is a full time job in itself. I'm also employed full-time performing accounting functions for a news and entertainment company in Atlanta.

What is your advice to those who are seeking employment and have no hope? Sometimes seeking employment starts with you. This world is not set up to hand us anything. That just doesn't work. You have to find something and make it your own. Start small. Don't be afraid to take baby steps. When in doubt, do for self!

After working hard in my two month temp position about a week before my last day the brought me in and said the noticed how well I had worked in mu position and offered me the opportunity to run the YR Program for the state of Georgia

What did you want to be when you were a child/ teenager?
As a child I had this dream of being a designer. I never actually saw myself in the military. But the older i got the more i realized i had a passion for a few other things versus the design field.

Are doing your dream job?
No im not doing my dream job but I am helping people and that is what I love.

What do you like MOST about what you do? What do you like the LEAST?
What I like the most is the immediate positive affect that my program has on service members their families and friends. We bring them together to have an opportunity to discuss and/or resolve issues that could arise before or after deployment. What I like the least is the effect that government funding has on the program. If the funds are not there then we are not able to provide the level of assistance that we would like to.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
In the next five years I see myself owning my own Corporate Event Panning business obtaining my license to minister and sharing the many gifts that God has placed inside of me with others.

Are you happy with where you are in life? Yes I am happy but never comfortable. I always have this expectation that God is going to do something else.

What more do you want to do with your life?
I definitely want to have children and take more time to mentor young women who may not be sure what they want to do. Just help give them a little guidance

What drives/motivates you?
God is my biggest motivator. The gifts He has given me I feel i just cant let them go to waste. I want to leave a mark in this world for my future children and my family to be proud of.

What else do you do?
I also sing with a gospel group have a home based business and i really enjoy cooking!

What is your advice to those who are seeking employment and have no hope?
I advice is as your seeking employment don't forget about the gifts that God has already placed with in you. There is something that you do that the worlds needs and you can create your own income with that gift. Never count yourself out!

Feature #17: Coy Kindred, Owner | Operator | Dreamer

Name:  Coy Kindred

Current Job Position Title: Owner | Operator | Dreamer

Company NameHigh Hopes Learning Center

Contact Informationiamohsocoy@gmail.com

Special skills: Touching hearts and opening minds

Describe your job story:
After being in the financial industry for five years, I came to the realization that I was living out someone else’s dream -- not my own.  Although it was difficult to leave behind my 401(k) and the other perks of working for a large corporation, I sincerely felt it was something I needed to do or I’d regret it later. I planned for about 18 months by saving money, doing market research and finding mentors that could give both emotional support and solid business advice. I’m so grateful for all of the preparation because without it, I know I wouldn’t be successful today.

What did you want to be when you were a child/ teenager?
I wanted to be a little bit of everything growing up. I remember wanting to be a lawyer, then a teacher and at some point I had convinced myself I was destined to be the next Maya Angelou.

Are doing your dream job?
Actually, yes! I mean, my ultimate dream is to open a charter school and travel the world for the sole purpose of inspiring and encouraging others, but you know: baby steps.

What do you like MOST about what you do? What do you like the LEAST?
The best thing about working with children is seeing the joy in their eyes when they realize they just learned something new. Knowledge truly is power, and sometimes I feel the little ones understand that better than we do. The toughest part about being an entrepreneur is the amount of time and effort required. As an employee, when the clock struck 5 I could drop everything and head home. As a business owner, my work never truly ends. There is always something new to learn or improve upon. I estimate I work about 55 hours a week compared to my previous 40 – but the trade-off of having the freedom of executive control over my career far outweighs any of the downsides.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
This is always a tough question. I am compelled to say I see myself happy. I’m sure I’m supposed to discuss how I want to expand the business to multiple locations, have financial security, etc. but there is so much more to life. Whatever I decide to do with my life in the next five years, I just want to be as happy as (or happier than) I am today.

Are you happy with where you are in life?
Absolutely! As I complete goals, I always replace them with more. I’m certainly not complacent, but I am content.
What more do you want to do with your life?
If I could speak as quickly as my mind races, this would be much easier to answer. Ultimately, I want to be able to use all of the gifts God has blessed me with to bless others.

What drives/motivates you?
My mother has been the motivation behind many of the choices I’ve made in life. Although she is no longer with us, she taught me how to make the best out of any situation. I think I’ve been molded into this optimistic, dreamy-eyed girl; I can’t imagine that will ever change.

What else do you do?
I’ve been known to dabble in poetry… http://iamohsocoy.com

What is your advice to those who are seeking employment and have no hope?
Sometimes the only opportunities you’ll have in life are the ones you create. If you are under-employed, I believe some time should be taken to re-evaluate your strengths and uncovering the angles you haven’t tried that could utilize those skills. You might surprise yourself! Believe it or not, we’re ALL good at something. It’s also important to know that you can’t always do it on your own. Find a support system, build a network and never lose faith that things will work out.

Feature #98: Khalifa Lee, Community & Earth Activist...

Name: Khalifa Lee

Current Job Position Title(s):

Community & Earth Activist, Community Relations Director, WPSM; Executive Director, UFY; Co-Founder/Vice President, HD180; Co-Founder & Board Member, BEMHSAA; Freelance Computer Technician; Healing Artist in Public Speaking/Teaching, Poetry, and Art.

Company Name(s):

Wise Protective Services and More, Inc., Unite For Youth, Hood 180, Benjamin E. Mays High School Alumni Association.

Contact Information:
communityrelationsdirector@wpsm.orgwww.wpsm.org, klee.hood180inc@gmail.com www.hood180inc..com, uniteforyouthinc@gmail.com, bemhsaa@gmail.com

Special skills: Community Organizing; Event Planning, Marketing; Organization and Program Design/Management; Youth Empowerment and Development; Education; Artistic Design; Computer Technical Skills; Keen Sight, Listening Ears, and Open Heart.

Describe your job story:
In my field, everyone is willing to give a helping hand.  I grew up being a helper – my grandmother had a shop in her church and I would be remembered by the community as the child screaming “Next!” for the following customer in line. That translated into me becoming involved with Hands on Atlanta and leading community service projects around the city.  I also worked for Grady Hospital’s Teen Clinic as a Peer Health Educator, teaching 7-8th graders about the dangers of drugs and sexual peer pressure.

At the University of Virginia I lead such operations as the Gear-Up program – we worked with a local middle school, in order to provide mentoring, leadership, and academic advancement for the students.  To accomplish such acts as formulating a day to celebrate De-Stereotypes, or getting the University to “state their profound regret” for slavery on grounds, or creating youth programs during a city celebration of Juneteenth – it was necessary to learn how to best reach out to community members across many spectrums of race and class, in order to build progress, unity, and reconciliation.

Such lessons instilled would come in handy when returning to Atlanta to help my ailing mother diagnosed with cancer.  I joined AmeriCorps again, working with GulfSouth Youth Action Corp., operating an after school program in my community that would provide youth empowerment, student enrichment, and youth community engagement. At the same time I worked for United States Human Rights Network & National Association for the Advancement of Colored People as an intern.  This would lead me further into working with the city as I would become a Camp Best Friend’s Environmental Science Educator teaching the youth about the importance of the environment and the role humans play within it – they loved growing their own plants the most.

They say you never know who is watching, and in my journey I co-founded Hood 180, Inc. with a group of old and new friends, to beautify our community and engage our youth. I co-founded BEMHSAA to provide mentorship and scholarships to my alma mater.  I was tapped to become Executive Director for Unite for Youth a mentorship program for underprivileged youth in Atlanta. I finally would be called upon to help start and lead Wise Protective Services and More, Inc. as Community Relations Chair – providing services and mentorship to families affected by obesity, HIV/AIDS, and domestic violence.

I have been blessed through being able to provide such services to my community and the people of the world. The people and children I have touched always remind me that I do this work because it needs to be done, and since the need will not end tomorrow, more leaders must be developed.

What did you want to be when you were a child/ teenager?
I wanted to be a cartoonist and a doctor. I wanted to be a hero. I wanted to be a father & husband. As a teenager, I wanted be a computer technician/engineer, architect, and a public servant. Most of all I wanted to be happy and a provider of smiles to the world.

Are doing your dream job?
Yes. I live in my dreams, which leads me to dream of new projects to help the world all the time.

What do you like MOST about what you do? What do you like the LEAST?
In what I do I enjoy receiving the smiles of youth, adults, and elders often, from my deeds – while being blessed to see the mode of progress to the greater global community of humanity via the people and land that I have touched through such work. What I like the least is the fact that with such a high necessity for such work to be done, every year the need grows.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
In 5 years I see myself with my wife and children, working on my 2nd house, and having a farm & business - in multiple countries. And also being an author. All at the same time while advancing my organizations work nationally.

Are you happy with where you are in life?
I have a lot of reach, coming in and out - and a lot of those hands are on my time. I am happy seeing that I am making a difference. However, happiness and contentment should not be confused. I am happy in the growth in the world and my effect in this growth towards positive holistic healing, but I am not happy in the current situation we all must endure with those who would like to see otherwise.

What more do you want to do with your life?
I want to travel the world. In my traveling I would like to meet every culture and people of the world - and record/learn of them and their similarities.

What drives/motivates you?
Beyond the feeling of warmth I get when my genetic story and the promise of peace drives and motivates me.  I grew up learning and studying history of the world. When I see so much plight, plunder, and destruction of the present, and I remember the peace and pleasantries of the past - I glow in the understanding that we all can come together and make a wondrous future free of frivolous suffering.

What else do you do?
I sit on the University of Virginia's President Board Committee to Commemorate Slavery at UVa. I am on the Planning Board for the UVa Black Alumni Weekend. I am a volunteer for WeCycle. I am a Spoken Word performer. I am a freelance writer. I do photography and paint, I also am a freelance computer technician.

What is your advice to those who are seeking employment and have no hope?

In the world of wants and needs, you have little time to wait on a company to take you in. Take every opportunity as a way to your future success in happiness. Go out to networking events, and stay in touch with close and old friends, as well, take the time to meditate on what you would like to see yourself give to the world for the rest of your life. These can lead you into your future jobs, just as much as it would for you to start your own business & feed yourself. You can never loose with positive energy supporting your every move! Thus remaining positive and faithful will always lead you in the right direction.

Feature #97: Vashonda King, Hair Care Specialist

Name: Vashonda King

Current Job Position Title: Hair Care Specialist

Company Name: Too Groovy Salon

Contact Information:
missvashondaking_03@yahoo.comwww.toogroovy.net, Instagram: @vkinghairstyles, www.facebook.com/vashondaking

Special skills: I specialize in natural hair care maintenance, educating women on the proper way to take care of their natural hair, and cutting.

Describe your job story:
After receiving a Dual Degree in Business Management and Marketing from Albany State University in 2007, I enrolled in cosmetology school at Empire Beauty School in Atlanta. Upon completion in 2008, I applied as a styling/shampoo assistant at N'Seya Salon. After 3 months of working there, the salon unexpectedly closed down due to reasons beyond the owner's control. I then applied and interviewed with the manager at Too Groovy Salon, but did not receive the position. In the meantime, I partnered as a freelance assistant for hairstylists that used to work for N'Seya Salon.

Eager to start building my own clientele, I moved on to work at a different salon where I was hired as an assistant and hairstylist. After only working there for a week, I was terminated because the owners felt like I was too timid around the clients. At this point I became discouraged about doing hair and decided to pursue a career in the field I received my degree. Desperate and in need of a job, a friend of mine helped me to attain employment with an Allstate independent insurance agent in 2009. After working for 9 months, the agent decided that I wasn’t fit for the role in insurance sales and terminated me.

So I decided to try and pursue a career in cosmetology once again. The same friend that helped me to get the insurance position had a friend that knew one of the owners of Too Groovy Salon. She owned a second salon called Sutera Hair Spa, where she was seeking hairstylists. I worked there for a year and a half before it closed down. The stylists that were working at Sutera Hair Spa at the time were allowed to begin working at Too Groovy Salon. Now, 2 years later I am currently one of the top producing stylists at Too Groovy Salon.

What did you want to be when you were a child/ teenager?
As a child/teenager, I always had a passion for doing hair, and knew that I wanted to become one of the top hairstylists in the world. I had other career interests as well such accounting, astronomy, pediatrics, and dentistry. But my ultimate vision for my life led me to be where I am now.

Are doing your dream job?
Currently I am doing part of my dream job. Ultimately, I would like to style hair in the film/movie industry, travel to educate other hairstylists, open my own chain of salons and hair schools, and create my own product line.

What do you like MOST about what you do? What do you like the LEAST?
The thing I like most about my job is that I come in contact with a lot of different women whom I get to beautify on a regular basis. It brings satisfaction to me knowing that I am able make others feel good inside by transforming their outer appearance. I am also privileged in knowing that someone else trusts my professional opinion when it comes to caring for something that is important to them.  Not only am I a hair care specialist, but I am somewhat of a confidant, therapist and friend. I don’t consider what I do a job because it’s something that I would do for free.  The thing I like least about my job is that I sometimes miss out on activities with family and friends over the weekends because I have to work.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
In 5 years, I see myself traveling and doing hair in the film/movie industry.

Are you happy with where you are in life?
I am happy where I am in life.

What more do you want to do with your life?
I want to do missions work oversees and open a non-profit organization that will help homeless people beyond what is being done now. I would also like to become a philanthropist for charitable organizations.

What drives/motivates you?
My motivation and drive comes from knowing that through Christ I can go wherever I can go in life as long as I keep him first. In keeping Him first, I pray, read the bible, and attend church regularly. By feeding my spirit with the goodness of the Lord Jesus, it keeps me from conforming to the patterns of this world, and motivates me to keep striving for better.

What else do you do?
Other than doing hair, I paint as a hobby.

What is your advice to those who are seeking employment and have no hope?
To those who are seeking employment and have no hope, I would say keep God first in your life and don’t give up. Matthew6:33 tells us to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.  We all have our season.  I used to think that my season would never come in life. But I now understand that the struggles that we face are only God’s way of preparing us for the position he wants us to have in life. We plan our course, but he orders our steps. He knows what is best for us even when we think we have it all together.

What is for you is for you, and no one can take that away. Have faith and the rest will follow. And just remember that tomorrow, today will become yesterday, and you will be able to look back and give your testimony and story as I have. Lastly, create a vision board of what you want to accomplish in life and place it on your wall where you can see it daily. This will keep things in perspective so that you won’t get side tracked with your vision for your life.
